COSTUME AND GARB

Welcome to the Barony of Aneala, we are glad to see you and just to make your first steps a little easier,
here is a simple guide to what wear to your first event.

To go with the absolute basic garb, you will need a pair of plain coloured tracksuit pants, jeans or trousers, (please don’t wear fluoro colours). Bare feet, sandals, ugg boots or plain boots are all fine. For the Ladies flat court shoes, (outside events are mostly on soft grass) or any of the above are fine. Kung fu shoes and any type of slippers are great.

For the Torso you can do two things easily and quickly.

The first is to make a

TABARD

and wear it over a long sleeved shirt/ jumper/ skivvy, (again, please avoid fluoro colours).

To make your tabard you will need,

2 meters of 90 cm wide material cut into two 1 meter lengths, hem the edges.

lay one piece on top of the other (fig. A) and sew/ stich together about 25 mm to 50 mm in from the outside edges (fig. B).

Turn inside out to hide the seams and belt at the waist.

If you want something a little more stylish, your second choice is a,

T-TUNIC.

To make your basic T-TUNIC you will need approx. 2 - 3 meters of  150 cm wide material for the average sized man, and 2 -3  meters for the average lady, 3 - 4 meters if  you want floor length.

Fold the material in half length wise (fig. 1), find a shirt that is loose fitting and lay it on the fabric with the shoulder seam on the fold  *. Measure your length from shoulder to knee

(or floor), then mark from the fold  * to that measurement. Now draw around the shirt, approx. 3 - 5 cm away from the edge, (this will give you a seam allowance) and then down to the knee/ floor length flaring the skirt, (fig. 2).

For the floor length version you may want wrist length sleeves. All you need to do is mark from the edge of the material to the side of the shirt, now cut out following the lines you have drawn.

Now Fold in half again this time side ways (fig. 3) mark  8 cm from the centre along the shoulder fold and 5 cm down the front. Draw a curved line from the top mark to the centre front mark and cut along this line (fig. 4).

Unfold the sideway’s fold and cut down the centre front approx. 8 - 10 cm through the top layer only (fig. 5) this gives you some where to put your head.

Now sew the seams and hem edges, then turn inside out.

Congratulations you are now the proud owner of a T-TUNIC,

you can if you wish attach braid or embroider the edges.

If you are only able to get 115 cm material you may have to add a piece to the sleeves to reach the wrist, you can do this after the tunic is cut out.

Take the off cut from the side and fold the widest part in half, and place the fold level with the shoulder fold * and slightly overlap the edges by 2 -3 cm. Measure from your neck to wrist along shoulder/ arm, then mark that measurement from the neck edge along the fold, (fig. 7). For the knee length version you may want to have it slit to the hip line, in which case don’t flare the skirt line and hem to length rather than seam.

We look forward to seeing your new garb at a forth coming event,
